Desktop Publishing Tips
Consult with us, The Press Printing Co., Inc. at the beginning of your project. This will save you time, money and frustration! Things to Discuss: Digital Files A high quality PDF is the preferred format. Please note: we are limited to the editing we are able to do on PDFs, so you will want to look it over carefully. We can accept files created in Microsoft Office software, which includes: Word, Excel, Powerpoint; the Adobe Creative Suite, which includes: InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator; and also Quark XPress. E-mail your digital file or bring it on a cd or flash drive. Please provide us with the file name so we may quickly find it amongst any other files you may have stored on your media. When we receive a digital file in one of the native file formats listed above we request that you provide us with a hard copy printout or low-resolution pdf to compare the layout, make sure the fonts are correct and that there are no missing text or graphics. Digital Photos When using photos taken on your digital camera for print, a setting of 300 dpi for resolution is recommended. Pictures that are taken from the web are 72 dpi resolution. They look good on your monitor, but will not print well, especially if they are enlarged. If you are bringing in your digital photos be sure to let us know the name of the files so we will be sure to use the correct images. Common Graphic File Formats .jpg - Used often on the web digital cameras produce .jpg. The resolution can be increased on your camera for optimal print output (300 dpi will produce good results). .gif - Used on the web, these images are generally 72 to 96 dpi. Please Note: .jpg and .gif images used at 72 to 96 dpi are good for quick transmission over the internet. They are NOT good for printing. It is not recommended to use images from websites for print. .tif - Bitmap image. It will lose resolution the more it is enlarged. These are easier than the .eps formats to manipulate in layouts when it comes to colorizing and such. .eps - Vector image. It will keep resolution when it is enlarged. EPS formats are good because you will not lose quality at almost any size. These are postscript images and you will need a postscript printer to be able to print them. How well will my job match to what I see on my monitor? Some printed colors may not exactly match the colors on your specific monitor. This is due to the wide differences in monitor calibration and the different technologies used. If we provide you with a digital proof, please remember that it is an electronic representation of the item you have ordered. It is not to be used for color match. Can you color match a sample that I printed out on my own printer, or a previously printed sample? At The Press Printing Co., Inc. we pride ourselves in being able to provide our customers with a finished product that meets your expectations. However, when it comes to color matchingwe will be able to reproduce close color. Due to widely varying results from different output devices, we unfortunately cannot guarantee that your finished piece will be an exact match of your printed sample. RGB & CMYK Color Space RGB - Red, Green and Blue. They are the colors that are used in monitors, television screens, digital cameras and scanners. CMYK - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. They are the inks/toners used in “full color printing". The combination of RGB light creates white, while the combination of CMYK inks create black. Therefore, it is physically impossible for the printing press to exactly reproduce colors as we see them on our monitors. You may want to convert your RGB images to CMYK if you are able to do so. This will allow you to see a closer representation of the colors in your image to make your own adjustments if needed. If no additional adjustments are needed, we will do a standard-value conversion to CMYK if you do not. |
